Jacob Riis Park, The Rockaways. Dubbed “The People’s Beach,” Jacob Riis Park is a popular summer destination for families. In addition to the sand and surf there is great food at the Riis beach bazaar, including the ever popular Ample Hills.

Hooks Creek Lake, Cheesequake State Park, Middlesex County, New Jersey. If ocean waves keep your toddler from jumping right in, try a lake! Hooks Creek Lake has a lifeguard, changing areas, and concession stand–in short, everything you need to keep your toddler safe and happy during a day at the “beach.”

Bear Mountain State Park, Harriman, New York. If your kids are anything like ours, they can quickly wear out on activities. So give them plenty of options! Take a family walk along gorgeous mountain trails, splash in the pool, ride the merry-go-round, swing at the playground, rent a boat, even visit the zoo. There are endless ways to spend the day at Bear Mountain.

Stone Barns Center, Tarrytown, New York. Spend a Saturday or Sunday afternoon at Stone Barns and participate in a variety of seasonal, hands-on activities. Meet the animals, collect eggs, and take a drop-in tours of the grounds–all are included with your one-day admission ticket. A visit is not complete without a trip to the Blue Hill Cafe, which offers visitors light snacks, farm-fresh lattes, and other locally-grown goodies
