SkipKid Weekend Roundup: September 17-18

Welcome back, Brooklyn! This weekend promises something for everyone. Enjoy a local art festival, an outdoor sing-along, and books galore! So get out there and play, and thank you for helping us spread the word about SkipKid!


Sing-along with Lloyd H. Miller of the Deedle Deedle Dees, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Prospect Heights. Enjoy this outdoor sing-along concert inspired by the plants and wildlife of the Discovery Garden. Children of all ages can join their voices and play along with instruments, and then head out into the garden to water the vegetables and explore.

Drag Queen Story Hour, Park Slope Library, Park Slope. In the spirit of unfettered exploration of self that great books can prompt, the Feminist Press brings a new reading series for children to the Brooklyn Public Library, featuring classic tales read by drag queens. Drag Queen Story Hour breaks down our most stifling ideas about gender while lifting up play, fierceness, and femininity for all.

September House Party, BRIC, Fort Greene. Come out for Brooklyn’s best all-ages, all-day party. Enjoy family dance classes, live music, gaming, art-making, and other participatory activities, all ending with a family disco party. Free with RSVP.

Brooklyn Book Festival Children’s Day, Downtown Brooklyn. Enjoy beloved and cool writers and illustrators all day at beautiful MetroTech Commons in Downtown Brooklyn, on two tented stages and in the auditorium of NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering. Books by participating authors and other new and beloved children’s books will be on sale with author book-signings after each program.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC Race For The Kids, Prospect Park. Thousands of New Yorkers will hit the ground running for this annual family event. Following the race, participants will take part in special festivities as part of Nickelodeon’s Worldwide Day of Play, including a picnic and appearances by popular Nickelodeon characters.


Roald Dahl 100: A Celebration for Kids and Families, Central Library, Prospect Heights. It’s Wondercrump Weekend, an international celebration of Roald Dahl’s 100th birthday! Enjoy an afternoon of everything Roald Dahl with phizz-whizzing activities for all ages.

Shop Up NYC, Gowanus. Discover a selection of the best shops under one roof as you take your kids for temporary tattoos, face painting, ice cream, crafts, make-your-own flower arrangements, family portraits, and more (including child-care while you shop!). Free and open to the public.

Baby Sign Language, Hootenanny Art House, Park Slope. Babies understand far more words than they are able to say. Learn how to get started, what to do, key strategies for success, and the signs most relevant to babies.

Story Time with Stephen Savage, Stories Bookshop and Storytelling Lab, Park Slope. Join beloved Brooklyn author and illustrator Stephen Savage for a story time with his new book The Mixed-up Truck.


Art Slope, Various locations throughout Park Slope. Art Slope is a free, multi-arts festival taking over the historic Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn from September 17-25. With an incredibly rich trove of artists, arts organizations, and venues to draw on, Art Slope will bring together artworks from across all disciplines and celebrate New York’s diverse creative community.
